How to Cut Expenses by Negotiating Bills
August 14, 2024
Let’s be honest – nobody likes receiving a bill. And let’s be even more honest – most of us don’t actively do anything about them. But what if I told you that you could potentially save hundreds of dollars a year simply by negotiating your monthly bills? It's easier than you think!
I recently was looking at my own bills and realized I was paying way too much for my internet and phone. After a little research and a whole lot of polite persistence, I managed to lower my bills significantly. It’s a win-win situation - they get your business, and you save money.
Here’s a breakdown of how to approach negotiating your bills:
1. Know Your Worth (and Your Competition)
- Research: Before you even think about calling, find out what your competitors are offering. Don’t just look at the price; consider the features and benefits. Sites like Consumer Reports, Wirecutter, and comparison shopping engines can be invaluable.
- Understand Your Current Rate: Don't just assume you're getting a good deal. Know exactly what you're currently paying and why. This gives you a baseline to negotiate from.
2. The Art of the Call
- Be Polite and Professional: This is key. Starting with a demanding or aggressive tone will almost certainly backfire. Remember, you're building a relationship with the customer service representative.
- Be Prepared to Explain Your Situation: Briefly and honestly explain why you’re considering switching providers. Are you a long-time customer? Are you moving? Are you simply looking for a better deal?
- Highlight Competitor Offers: This is where your research pays off. Say something like, “I've received a much more competitive offer from [Competitor Name] for [specific service] and was wondering if you could match or beat it."
- Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Discounts: Specifically ask about promotional rates, loyalty discounts, or any other available programs.
- Be Prepared to Walk Away: This is your power move. If they can't offer you a better deal, let them know you’re willing to switch providers. Often, this will prompt them to make a better offer to avoid losing you as a customer.
3. Bills You Can Specifically Negotiate:
- Internet Service: This is often the easiest to negotiate, especially with fierce competition.
- Cable/Satellite TV: Similar to internet, providers are constantly trying to retain customers.
- Cell Phone Plans: Many companies offer discounts for loyalty, bundling services, or switching to a different plan.
- Insurance (Auto, Home, Renters): Annual renewal time is a great opportunity to shop around and negotiate.
- Subscription Services (Streaming, Gym Memberships): Don't be afraid to ask for a discount, especially if you're considering canceling.
4. Follow Up
- Get Everything in Writing: Once you’ve reached an agreement, make sure to get it in writing, via email or through an updated contract.
