How to Save Money on Utility Bills by Making Small Changes
January 2021 – As the chill of winter sets in, it’s a perfect time to focus on keeping your home warm and your utility bills low. You don’t need to make a massive overhaul to see a difference. Many small, consistent changes can add up to substantial savings over time. Let’s look at some easy ways to reduce your energy and water consumption.
1. Temperature Control - It's All About Degrees
- Lower Your Thermostat: Even a few degrees can make a huge impact. Aim for 68°F (20°C) when you’re home and lower it when you’re away or sleeping.
- Use a Programmable Thermostat: Invest in a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature based on your schedule.
- Dress Warmer: Instead of cranking up the heat, put on a sweater! You’ll be surprised how much warmer you feel.
2. Lighting - Switch to LEDs
- LED Bulbs are Your Friend: Traditional incandescent bulbs are energy hogs. Replace them with LEDs – they use up to 75% less energy and last much longer.
- Turn Off Lights: It seems obvious, but make it a habit to turn off lights when you leave a room.
3. Water Conservation - Small Changes, Big Impact
- Shorten Showers: Reducing your shower time by just a minute or two can save gallons of water and energy (because of the hot water used).
- Fix Leaks: A leaky faucet or toilet can waste a significant amount of water. Get leaks repaired promptly.
- Low-Flow Showerheads & Faucets: Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators can dramatically reduce water usage without sacrificing water pressure.
- Only Run Full Loads: Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they’re fully loaded.
4. Appliance Efficiency
- Unplug Electronics: Many electronics continue to draw power even when they’re turned off (this is known as “phantom load”). Unplug chargers, TVs, and other devices when not in use.
- Use Smart Power Strips: These can automatically cut power to devices that aren't actively being used.
- Clean Refrigerator Coils: Dirty refrigerator coils make your fridge work harder to stay cool. Cleaning them regularly can improve efficiency.
5. Simple Habits for Lasting Impact
- Close Doors & Curtains: Closing doors and curtains at night helps insulate your home and reduce heat loss.
- Air Dry Dishes & Clothes: Skip the heated drying cycle and let your dishes and clothes air dry.
